Clinical audits

NextHealth Flow

Flow Quality is sold separately

NXH Flow clinical audits supports structured checks of clinical and safety practice. Ready-made tools cover hand hygiene, patient identification, handover, medication errors, needle-stick injuries, protective equipment, room disinfection, staff immunisation and sterilisation testing. Each tool scores an observation when it is submitted, and results are retained month by month. Quality teams can review the recorded pattern and look more closely at areas that need attention. These practice audit scores are separate from the Quality indicators capability, which is still being completed.

Why it is hard to do well

Consistent observations make recurring practice gaps easier to examine.

Review clinical practice through repeatable audit tools

Quality teams need a consistent way to examine daily practice. If each round uses a different working sheet or stores its result in a separate folder, it becomes harder to understand whether a recurring issue is isolated or appears across several review periods.

NXH Flow provides ready-made clinical and safety audit tools covering the stated areas of practice. Teams submit the audit, receive a score and retain results month by month. That structure supports review of recorded findings without requiring every audit exercise to begin with a new spreadsheet.

Each tool calculates its own score when the audit is submitted. The hand hygiene tool records which procedure steps were performed and the percentage achieved. The patient identification tool records whether the name, date of birth and record number were checked, and the resulting compliance percentage. Ask to see the scoring method for each tool you plan to use, so you can confirm it suits your audit programme.

Illustrative example: a hand hygiene observation

This example uses synthetic data.

A quality nurse observes a staff member on a ward and records which hand hygiene procedure steps were performed. On submission Flow scores the observation as a percentage of the steps achieved and keeps it against the month. Over the month the team reviews the stored results to see whether a pattern appears on that ward.

Choose one relevant tool for your demonstration, such as hand hygiene or patient identification. Review the questions, submit a sample assessment and inspect the monthly results. Confirm that the tool fits the facility’s review process. These audit scores are an available workflow; they should not be confused with the broader Quality indicators capability, which is still being completed.

Common questions

  • Clinical audits sits within Flow Quality, which is sold separately. Flow has no compulsory core package; choose the commercial modules your facility needs.

  • The described tools include hand hygiene, patient identification, handover, medication errors, needle-stick injuries, protective equipment, disinfection, immunisation and sterilisation testing.

  • The audit is scored when it is submitted. Results are retained month by month so the quality team can review the recorded pattern.

  • No. Clinical audit scoring is described as available. The separate Quality indicators capability is still being completed and must not be treated as live.
