Inpatient & Bed Management

Coordinate the stay, from admission to discharge

NextHealth Care

Included in Care Hospitals.

NXH Care inpatient tools connect bed status with admission, nursing and discharge. A live board shows each bed’s recorded state, lists admitted patients still waiting for a bed to be placed by drag and drop, and records transfers with a reason. A discharge checklist stays locked until the signed summary, nursing note, follow-up and final bill are in place. Discharge then sends the bed for cleaning and raises a housekeeping request. The board records state; it does not predict availability or length of stay.

Follow the stay from bed placement to discharge

  1. Step 1

    View beds

See each bed’s recorded state by ward

  2. Step 2

    Place patient

Put an admitted patient on an available bed

  3. Step 3

    Prepare discharge

Complete the checklist, summary and bill

  4. Step 4

    Discharge

    Release the bed for cleaning

  5. Step 5

    Clean

    Housekeeping returns it to available

What your team can do

  • See each bed’s recorded state across wards, including available, occupied, reserved, cleaning, maintenance and blocked.
  • List admitted patients still waiting for a bed and place them by drag and drop.
  • Transfer a patient between beds with a recorded reason.
  • Work through a discharge checklist that stays locked until every item passes.
  • Compile a starter discharge summary from the stay, for the doctor to edit and sign.
  • Raise a housekeeping request automatically when a bed goes to cleaning.

Know who changes each bed state

A bed board is only as reliable as the people who update it. In NXH Care the state changes at defined points, and each change has an owner.

  • Occupied: staff with admission rights place an admitted patient on an available or reserved bed, or transfer the patient with a reason such as transfer, upgrade, downgrade or isolation.
  • Cleaning: set when a discharge completes or a transfer moves the patient. A housekeeping request is raised without anyone entering it.
  • Available: set when housekeeping completes that request.

Discharge handover

Completing a discharge stays locked until every checklist item passes. The signed summary, the discharge nursing note, a booked follow-up and the finalised bill are derived from the record, and a follow-up is not required for dispositions such as leaving against advice or transfer out. Medical clearance, discharge prescriptions, patient education and pharmacy clearance are ticked by the person responsible, with their name and the time recorded. The doctor edits the starter summary compiled from the stay and signs it, which freezes it.

What this module needs

Inpatients and bed management is part of Care Hospitals and is not sold as an add-on. Within Care Hospitals, the final bill comes from Billing, nursing notes and handover from Ward Nursing, and pharmacy clearance from Pharmacy. An insured stay uses Claims and approvals for the claim.

What the board does not do

The board shows recorded state. It does not predict bed availability, length of stay or discharge timing, and a bed shown as available depends on staff keeping the record current.

Illustrative example: one admission, from bed to discharge

This example uses synthetic data.

A synthetic patient, Yusuf Sample, is admitted and appears in the waiting-for-bed list. The bed manager drags him onto an available bed in a general ward. On the day of discharge the doctor edits the starter summary and signs it, the nurse records the discharge note, a follow-up is booked and the bill is finalised. The doctor and the pharmacist tick their items, and the discharge completes. His bed turns to cleaning and housekeeping receives a request. When housekeeping finishes it, the bed shows as available.

Common questions

  • Inpatients and beds is included in Care Hospitals. It forms part of the hospital workflow alongside the clinical foundation provided by the other Care modules.

  • The live board shows each bed’s recorded state: available, occupied, reserved, cleaning, maintenance or blocked. Staff use that recorded state when placing admitted patients, so the board is only as current as the record.

  • A checklist that stays locked until every item passes: the signed discharge summary, the discharge nursing note, a booked follow-up where one applies, the finalised bill, and the ticks for medical clearance, discharge prescriptions, patient education and pharmacy clearance. Each tick records who made it and when.

  • Yes. Admitted patients can be placed using drag and drop. Review that step with a representative ward and admission example during the demonstration.

  • No. The board shows the recorded state of each bed. It does not forecast availability, length of stay or discharge timing.
