Clinical Orders & Results
Follow each test from the clinical request to the result
NextHealth CareIncluded in Care Clinics Pro and Care Hospitals; available as an add-on to Care Clinics.
NXH Care connects the laboratory request, the specimen and the result to the patient’s visit. The clinician places the order from the encounter and chooses routine, urgent or STAT priority. The specimen carries a barcode from collection to the laboratory, and the result returns beside the original order, marked preliminary until a second person verifies it. A critical value is flagged for the ordering clinician, who remains responsible for reviewing the result and deciding what to do.

What your team can do
- Place laboratory orders from the encounter with routine, urgent or STAT priority.
- Send an order to this facility’s laboratory, another branch or an outside laboratory.
- Follow each specimen by barcode from collection to receipt at the laboratory.
- See results beside the original order, marked preliminary until verified.
- Show critical values in red and alert the ordering clinician in Care.
Keep the clinical question connected to the laboratory result
A test request passes through several hands before the result can be reviewed. The requesting clinician needs the result beside the original order, and the laboratory needs the specimen to stay tied to the right patient.
In NXH Care a clinician places the order from the encounter and sets its priority: routine, urgent or STAT. The order can go to the laboratory of this facility, to another branch of the group that runs one, or to an outside laboratory recorded as external. Results fill in on the encounter under the order. A result is marked preliminary until a second member of staff verifies it.
What happens with a flagged result
- Care derives the flag from the value and the test’s reference range. A value more than 20% of the range width outside the range is flagged critical, and the technician can override the flag.
- Saving a critical value needs the technician to acknowledge that the ordering clinician will be informed. Care then sends an alert to that clinician’s notification bell, naming the patient’s MRN and the test.
- Care does not call or text the clinician, and it does not escalate an alert that stays unread. Keep your own critical-result procedure alongside it.
Dependencies
Result entry, verification and quality control belong to the Laboratory module, which also covers connecting laboratory analysers. This module does not connect devices by itself. An order sent to an outside laboratory skips the laboratory worklist, and its result is recorded against the order by hand, with the report file attached if there is one.
Illustrative example: a flagged result
This example uses synthetic data. Dr Amal Rahman, a made-up clinician, orders a STAT potassium test for a synthetic patient, Omar Haddad. The specimen is collected and labelled with a barcode, and the laboratory scans that barcode to receive it. The technician enters 6.4 against a reference range of 3.5 to 5.0. Care flags the value critical high, the technician acknowledges that the clinician will be informed, and the result is saved as preliminary. Dr Rahman receives an alert and sees the value in red beside the order. A second technician verifies it, and it becomes final. Dr Rahman still reviews the result and decides what to do.

Common questions
-
Lab orders and results is included in Care Clinics Pro and Care Hospitals. It is not included in the Care Clinics plan.
-
Results return beside the original laboratory order on the encounter, marked preliminary until a second member of staff verifies them. Critical values show in red. The clinician reviews the result and decides what to do.
-
Care tracks specimens by barcode from collection to result. The Laboratory module covers the result-entry and verification workflow alongside this ordering and results connection.
-
No turnaround guarantee is made here. The module connects requests, specimen tracking and returned results; actual timing depends on the test and the laboratory’s process.
-
The technician must acknowledge that the ordering clinician will be informed before the value saves, and Care sends an alert to that clinician’s notification bell. Care does not call or text the clinician or escalate an unread alert, so keep your own critical-result procedure.
-
Yes. An outside laboratory is recorded as an external provider. Its order skips the laboratory worklist, and the team records the result against the order when the report arrives, with the report file attached if there is one.
